• Three environmental enrichments are evaluated though behavioural observation in laboratory mice.
• Effective enrichments must be practical, species-appropriate, desirable to the animals and maintains novelty over longer periods.
• The use of enrichment must be time- and cost-effectively.
• Effective enrichments will be used routinely in the facility.
